Classes and Workshops

  JUNE 2008

Total Toddler Arts and Crafts Adventure

Join us for an hour of stories and hands-on activities that will give your young one an opportunity to develop their creative, motor, and sensory skills.  Snack provided.

Fridays:  June 6 and 20, July 11 and 25     10 -11 a.m. 

Ages 1 - 4 (parents welcome)

Conservation Kids - Dirt to Dinner

Join us in the Children’s Garden - we’ll plant seeds and seedlings, investigate the critters in the soil, learn about nutrition, and do fun craft projects with flowers and other garden materials.  Toward the end of the summer, we’ll pick vegetables for you to take home and enjoy with your family!  Please bring gloves and sunscreen and wear closed-toed shoes. 

Tuesdays:  June 10, July 1, July 8, July 22, August 5, August 19      9 - 10:30 a.m.

Conservation Kids Camp:  Kids Garden Club

Join in the fun as we plant seeds and seedlings in our new raised garden beds and teepees, learn good gardening skills and share in the harvest.  Crafts included.  Pre-registration is required, then come as often as you are able over the summer.  Bring sunscreen, a water bottle, and gloves - please, no sandals!

Conservation Kids: Bee Facts

Did you ever wonder how bees make that wonderful sweet stuff called honey?  And just how do people work with bees?  Join us and see honeybees, honeycombs, and the equipment a beekeeper uses.  Parents welcome!

Conservation Kids: Incredible Story of Honey and Bees

Come spend an hour with Shelly “The Bee Lady” and you will learn how to identify the differences between the queen, drone, and worker bees.  You will also learn the importance of pollination and how the bees make their honey.

JULY 2008

Conservation Kids:  Summer Science Day Camp - Hands On Nature

Nature-oriented activities for the young and curious.  Come join in the fun as we learn about ecology through hands-on experiences with nature and art.  We will be in the field part of the time, exploring a variety of habitats and their bugs and birds.  Clothing should be rugged and comfortable for outdoor activities.  Please, no flip-flops!  Bring a water bottle, hat with a brim, and come sunscreened.  Snacks and all materials will be provided.  On Thursday we will take a bus to another field site.  The bus will leave promptly at 9:05 a.m. from the Children’s Museum - parents of younger children are welcome on both days.  Arrive 15 minutes early on Wednesday to complete waivers. 

Wednesday and Thursday, July 16 - 17         9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Conservation Kids:  As the Worm Turns

The “red wigglers” are like free farm help.  They spend most of their time eating their vegetables and fruit.  When they eat they leave behind “castings” that are a very valuable type of fertilizer.  Come see for yourself how these little farm helpers work.  Parents welcome!

Conservation Kids:  Worms and Composting

Did you know that each person in the United States produces about 3.5 pounds of trash a day, of which 25% is food and yard waste that is biodegradable?  When this is put in a landfill, it can take years to decpmpose.  But when you compost this material at home it will decompose within a few months.  Once this matierial is turned into compost, it can be used as fertilizer for gardens and lawns.  Attend this class and learn how to turn your fruit and vegetable scraps into a valuable product.

August 2008

Junior Rangers:  Mountain Pine Beetles

An explosion in the mountain pine beetle population means these tiny insects are invading many more trees than usual, and that’s raising havoc with our forests.  During a field trip to the mountains you will learn about their lifestyle, why they are able to create such devastation to our trees, and how forest managers are responding to this outbreak.  Arrive 15 minutes early to complete waivers.  Clothing should be comfortable for outdoor activities.  No sandals.  Bring a water bottle, hat with brim, ample lunch, and sunscreen.  Adults welcome on this field trip.

Friday, August 1          9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
